This post is about classical conditioning created by Pavlov and what ideally made him first create the term. He conducted a test to measure how much a dog salivates in response to food Instead of the dog salivating when seeing the food it began when it heard the footsteps on the way to being fed due the dog knowing food was on the way. This is where it all began and the magic of psychology and classical conditioning came to be.
Pavlov then designed a controlled experiment to see what would happen if we incorporated a bell, light, or touch on the leg to teach a dog to respond to a natural stimulus. In this experiment the unconditioned stimulus was the food, unconditioned response was salivating and neutral stimulus was the bell. Pavlov introduced the bell before the food which made the dog create a temporal contiguity and realize when the bell was rang the food would come shortly after. After conditioning the learned response was the dog salivating at the sound of the bell even when food is not present!
